Currently the weather here in New England is a lot like the Katy Perry song “it’s hot then it’s cold”, you never know what to wear or how the day is going to turn out. It’s funny how sometimes the weather is a lot like business…do you sometimes feel unsure of what each day is going to bring, and that your business often runs hot and cold?
In order to keep warm, sometimes you have to build a fire. To keep a fire burning it needs two things; good dry logs and the right amount of air to feed the flames. The same is true when building your business, you need two things in order to keep the fire burning to prevent you from feeling the cold; action and systems.
Now if you have ever tried to build a fire you know that it can be frustrating, trying to build a roaring and warm fire. Even if you get the fire started, you still need to keep the flames fanned, and sometimes the fire doesn’t take. When that happens you need to go back and examine the elements to build a fire. Do you have the right wood, is it damp? Without dry wood, it doesn’t matter if you spend all day fanning the flame, it just won’t burn. Start with the right wood, and allow for air to feed it and you will stay warm and toasty.
So now let’s take a look at what you’ve been doing in your business, are you taking a lot of ACTION, but not getting anywhere? Do you have a stockpile of logs but no fire? Maybe your logs are damp, meaning you are focusing on the wrong actions, what do you really need to be doing to build and grow your business? If the action steps you are taking are not bringing you closer to your goals, take another look at where you should be spending your time.
Do you have systems in place to flow through like air and feed the fire? If you find yourself sending similar emails out, responding to similar questions, having similar phone calls, if you are repeating any tasks in your business chances are great that you can and should build a system around it. Otherwise, you might as well use the air you have and blow the fire out, because you cannot take the right action, without being organized and systematized about it.
Feed the fire with logs of ACTION, and keep a good fire burning with the right amount of oxygen to fuel the fire, and in your business that comes from having a SYSTEMS in place. Take the steps to have both of these key elements in your business and you’ll be nice and warm, all year long!
